Local 444 Supporting Sole Focus Mental Health Project

Charlie Brooks donation
A new campaign of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Windsor is getting a major boost in the name of a labour icon. Unifor Local 444 today announced a $50,000 donation toward the 3-year Sole Focus Project fundraising campaign. In making today’s announcement Local 444 President Dino Chiodo paid tribute to a previous president: “I would like to present on behalf of local 444 our executive board, a cheque to the CMHA for the sole focus project taking a stand for mental health in the amount of $50,000 to honour Charlie Brooks” CMHA local CEO Claudia den Boer says the donation will make a difference funding workshops and other education initiatives. Charlie Brooks’ grandson, Stan Hayes, was one of the family members present for the announcement and says they really appreciate his memory being continued with this gift. Brooks was shot and killed by a mentally troubled member of the local in 1977. The Sole Focus Project will support training and education about mental health at numerous workplaces. The CMHA will have a formal launch of the fundraising campaign next month. (Feb 15)
